ATOMIC HABITS - TINY CHANGES, REMARKABLE RESULTS
If you have been following my blog, you will recall that one of my goals this year is to read more. I am starting with a simple goal to read at least 1 book a month and I have my amazing book club members as my accountability partners.
We started this year with the book - Atomic Habits by James Clear and if there is one book you need to read this year - it is this one!
The book lays out in very simple and practical terms how to build good habits using the strategy of 'aggregation of marginal gains'.
The central philosophy of the book is the proven concept that "Success is the product of daily habits, not once-in-a-lifetime transformations".
Simply put, "You get what you repeat"
As humans, we generally tend to dismiss the small wins and want to focus on the fast and quick methods. This book however sheds light into how a slight change in your daily habits can guide your life to a different destination .
The book also shares tips that can help you with building and sticking with new habits, breaking a habit and how to recover quickly when your habits break down.
A few take-aways I would like to share :
All big things come from little beginnings
What starts as a small win accumulates into something much more..... The effects of your habits multiply as you repeat them ..... Consistency is key
Focus more on your trajectory ( the journey) than the results (your destination). If you are taking the right steps, you can be sure of the outcome...... "Fix the inputs and the outputs will fix themselves"
Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become. Therefore, decide who you want to be and prove it to yourself with small wins.
"Until you work as hard as those you admire, don't explain away their success as luck"
My favorite quote from the book is this - "When nothing seems to help, I go and look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that blow that did it, but all that had gone before."
If you only plan to read 1 book this year, I would highly encourage you to read Atomic Habits. This is one of those books that you can read over and over again over the years and there will always something to learn each time.
If you have read Atomic Habits, please feel free to share your own lessons/ take-aways from the book.
Wishing you a great weekend and a productive week ahead.
Love,
Nifemi
